Q. Can you tell us more about yourself?
A. I grew up on steaks from Black Angus. My Mom worked for at the one on Elliott Ave. We often had lunch at Dicks, Dags or Arctic Circle. I remember when 7-11 first opened on Queen Anne Ave (back then, it was open from 7AM until 11pm.–Wow!).

My love is and always will be the Pacific Northwest, and Seattle is my hometown (Go Grizzlies!). As a matter of fact, I went to the same Seattle high school as Kathi Goertzen of KOMO-TV (best wishes to her, and good health too!). What a monument to radio talent this great city has produced. Pat O'Day, Lan Roberts, Gary Mitchell, Andy Barber, Burl Barer (and so many Steves and more Garys too!).

Mark with Peter Cetera of the band "Chicago"

Seattle and the Puget Sound has created so many great things I just want to be a part of it all! I know where the boats are moored from "Deadliest Catch", where a member of the band "Chicago" lives here, the Seattle Sea Gals Cheerleaders are good friends of mine, I helped "The Ventures" get in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. I'm a Patches Pal (JP), I've had a Bigfoot sighting, I know how to catch salmon, crab and shrimp in local waters. Mark Lindsay (The Raiders) still owes me lunch at his restaurant.

Dad was a test pilot and was a flight instructor at BOEING (30 years), Mom was one of the first to create a Women’s Consignment shop in Seattle (Mary's Pop'ins), I am youngest of 6 brothers and sisters who all laughed when I said "I want to be on the radio". I have been honored to have learned from the AM Radio legends of Seattle from KOL, KJR, and KING of the 1960's. They were the music monsters from my school days.

I have interviewed Dick Clark (my idol), and have been under supervision of top radio programmers from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, all without having to leave here. I miss the great hangouts like Parkers Ballroom, Lake Hills, Spanish Castle and Green Lake Aqua Dive. What makes this better than all this is anyone I meet who says "Mark, thank you for being you."

All in all, I'm just a guy who loves how a song played on radio can still just make your day the best. Songs that don't remind you of a TV video but of a place, a person, a fun time, a concert, a movie, a girl, a boy. I love all the community involvement here in the area and all the wonderful people who make this the greatest place in the world! I am a product of my environment, great city, great people, great job, makes a great person!! Try it yourself!!

Q. Mark, what would you call some of your greatest moments?
A. I set the world record for sitting in a hot tub of chocolate.: 29 Hours 30 mins! I’m also the only man who has made it to Sea Gals Cheerleaders Finals... click here for my actual dance routine!

Q. Who is the first celebrity you’ve ever met?
A. Connie Stevens/Actress.....I was on my first solo room service run for The Edgewater Hotel in Seattle and it happened to be her room. She tipped me 50 cents for a dinner, wine, and flowers, she was wearing
a robe, no makeup and looked very shy –
Ku Ku Cha Choo!! It was not a Mrs. Robinson kind of moment that’s for sure!

Q. What’s the one thing you would like to be known for?
A. Finding Bigfoot! I did have an encounter once…

Q. What nurtured your connection to the Deadliest Catch?
A. My Dad, Captain George, was a key person at Boeing in the flight training program after years of being a test pilot and helping to create pilot training manuals (some of his first work is at the Seattle Museum Of Flight). Many people have asked about my connection to The Deadliest Catch fishermen seen on Discovery Channel (and to fishing in general). The answer is: my Dad, my hero. He was only 24 years old when he received his first orders in The US NAVY, which were to fly PBYs (Amphibious Patrol Bombers) and patrol a place in Alaska called Dutch Harbor. He arrived to his station there in Late May of 1942. Soon after, on June 3, 1942, he was with VP-42-6 (Pat Wing 4). At around 5:30AM that day, Capt. Lucias Campbell and his crew of six (including my Dad) had to fly to COLD BAY to refuel. As the story goes, the weather was totally inhospitable: very windy and wet. The temperature was becoming colder by the minute while they refueled through the wing of the craft using large barrels. During this time, a call was received by the crew that Dutch Harbor was being attacked by The Japanese Imperial Navy. Orders were given to immediately go airborne and find the location of the carrier of the attacking Japanese Zeros. They immediately embarked. Two hours later, in winds of 80 mph with still very heavy rains, the PBY did find the fleet. As they approached it to chart its location, a ZERO began to attack them. Their PBY was hit and was shot down into the high seas.

Through a series of miracles the plane dived uncontrollably, hit the waves at a high speed -- and stayed afloat! The navigator, a man obsessed with always having enough pencils, then began to plug the bullet holes caused by the ZERO! Remarkably enough, the caliber of the holes was the same as a pencil's diameter. The crew, including my father, were lost at sea until later in the evening when a lost PBY suddenly appeared in the stormy sky above. With communication possible only by flashlight, they were able to turn around and soon found the only Coast Guard Boat assigned to The Gulf Of Alaska. The wayward PBY flew just above the deck of this Coast Guard vessel, NEMEHA Sub Chaser, and they dropped a sack with a note and a wrench in it for weight. That note gave the position of my Dad and the crew of VP-42-6. That day of rescue would later bring my Dad, George, a second chance at life. And live it he did, to the tune of seven children, one of them being me, Mark Christopher.

You can learn more about these aircrafts at The PBY Memorial Foundation- a group in Whidby Island that I joined on behalf of my father.
